As we head into Memorial Day weekend, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of barbecues, beach trips, and a much-needed extra day off. But before we dive into the unofficial start of summer, it's important to pause and remember why this day exists — and the enormous sacrifices behind it.

Memorial Day is a time to honor the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country. It is not about sales or celebrations, but about remembrance — a solemn tribute to those who never made it home.

These brave individuals stood for something greater than themselves. They fought for freedom, justice, and the values that define our nation. Their selflessness and courage have secured the liberties we often take for granted, and it is because of their sacrifice that we are able to gather with our families, pursue our dreams, and live in peace.

Across the country, flags are lowered to half-staff, wreaths are laid on graves, and names are spoken aloud in ceremonies that span generations. Whether at Arlington National Cemetery or a small town memorial, the message is the same: we will not forget.

This weekend, as we enjoy time with loved ones, let's take a moment to reflect — to remember those who served and died, and to teach future generations about the true meaning of Memorial Day. If you see a veteran, thank them. If you know a Gold Star family, offer your support. And most importantly, take a quiet moment to honor those who gave everything.

Freedom isn’t free. It was paid for by the brave. This Memorial Day, we remember them.
