The pleasant weather is arriving... although it can vary day by day! Nevertheless, flowers are beginning to bloom, and tree buds are emerging. It's an excellent time to go outside and begin some spring home maintenance.
Exterior Maintenance
Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear
Clear gutters and downspouts of leaves or debris and check for any signs of damage. Clogged gutters or damaged downspouts can cause water damage by not properly diverting water away from your home.
Inspect roof
Winter storms can take quite a toll on the roof. When spring arrives, start by making a simple visual inspection of your roof. Inspect for loose, damaged, or missing shingles and schedule repairs if needed.
Check for Signs of Termites
Beginning in March and going through May or June, be on the lookout for these winged insects. Termites swarm in the spring, If there’s a bunch of winged insects flying out of a hole in the woodwork, it may be termites. Call a licensed professional pest control company. You’ll save money and trouble in the long run..
Check for other exterior damage
Repair torn window screens and weather stripping, cover holes and gaps where animals and bugs can get in and check the chimney for signs of water damage.
Lawn, Garden & Landscaping
Rake up leftover leaves and debris to promote healthy grass growth. Trim trees and shrubs away from the house to prevent damage.
Interior Maintenance
HVAC system
Replace air filters for better air quality and system efficiency. Schedule an HVAC tune-up before turning on the air conditioning.
Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Detectors
Test your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors and replace the batteries if necessary. It is recommended by the National Fire Protection Association that you replace your smoke alarm batteries every 6 months. Make it easy to remember by changing them at the same time you move your clocks forward and back.
Check the Basement and Attic
Head into the basement and attic to look for signs of moisture that you might not have noticed. Look for leaks, water stains and mold. Any odd smells — like mold or mildew — should be addressed immediately. Find and seal off the source of moisture to prevent serious water damage or mold issues.
