What is National Wear Red Day all about?

National Wear Red Day is to raise awareness of heart disease which is the leading cause of death in the United States.

Being physically active is a major step toward good heart health. It’s one of your most effective tools for strengthening the heart muscle, keeping your weight under control and warding off the artery damage from high cholesterol, high blood sugar and high blood pressure that can lead to heart attack or stroke.

Want to be active and stay local? Here's a short list of great activities you can do right here in Billerica to stay heart healthy!

  • Go for a brisk walk! Going for a 30 minute walk around your neighborhood improves circulation which results in lowered blood pressure and heart rate! Are you looking to explore outside your neighborhood though and hit the trails instead? Well Billerica offers many nature trails, you can access town trail maps here. The Billerica Recreation Department also offers a hiking program too!

  • Aerobic Exercise! Whether you are interested in joining a gym, or prefer to take a more personal approach by taking part in a class, Billerica has over a half dozen gyms to choose from, while the Billerica Recreation Department also offers zumba classes. There is also adult swim available at the Boys & Girls Club

  • Take up a sport! Would you rather have a little competition to get the heart pumping? The Billerica Recreation Department offers, pickleball, volleyball & skating! Or if a casual experience is more your style, unbury those old skates and head up to the Hallenborg Ice Pavillion to test out your old moves during public skating! Grab a few friends and head up a game of basketball or tennis at one of the many courts in town. Pinehurst park (Old Ditson Park) basketball court doesn't need to be reserved by the courts down at the Peggy Hannon Rizza Complex does.

Get moving and take the first steps to making a healthier you!
